Lameness in Pregnant Sows Alters Placental Stress Response

چکیده
Pregnant sows from commercial pig farms may experience painful states, such as lameness, an essential indicator in assessing sow welfare. We investigated the effect of lameness during last third pregnancy on reproductive performance and placental glucocorticoid concentrations sows. Periodic locomotion assessments were carried out two using a validated 0–5 scoring system (from 0: normal locomotion; to 5: downer animal). Sows both (N = 511) grouped based their average scores. On Farm 1, 30 selected either Not Lame (NL 16; X¯ 0–1) or (L 14; > 1). 2, 39 (G1 12; 0–1), Moderately (G2 13; 1.1–2), Severely (G3 ≥ 2.1). Reproductive data (gestation length, litter weight, piglet size, number piglets born alive/mummified/stillborn) recorded farms. Moreover, intrauterine growth restriction score dead first week also recorded, placenta samples collected determine cortisol/cortisone concentrations. A linear mixed model was used analyze data. The proportion pregnant >40%, gestation length tended decrease with presence (p < 0.1) G2 had higher ratio than G1 G3 0.01). In conclusion, high assessed, which reduce efficiency protecting offspring sows’ stress response.

Measuring Lameness in Sows
The movement away from sow gestation stalls to group housing presents several major welfare issues from the standpoints of facility design and sow management. In choosing the type of sow gestation housing, it will be important to adopt the system with the most advantages and to be able to assess factors that will impact on the sows’ welfare, longevity in the herd and thereby the producer’s econ...

Introduction Lameness is generally defined as “incapable of normal locomotion, deviating from the normal gate [1].” Lameness can result from damage to any of the structures involved in locomotion including the bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and blood supply of the shoulder, hock, stifle, foot, toe or hoof. A significant portion of lesions that can cause lameness are not visible on external exa...
متن کاملRisk factors of lameness in sows in England.
Lameness in pigs is a major welfare concern and one of the most commonly reported reasons for premature culling of breeding sows. In this study, the prevalence of lameness in sows was estimated using data from 76 pig breeding units in England and risk factors associated with the occurrence of lameness were examined. The prevalence of lameness in sows was 4.5% (farm median 5.0%, range 0-40%), wi...
متن کاملTryptophan requirement of pregnant sows.
Amino acid requirements of sows may change from early to late gestation due to the accelerated growth of products of conception after d 70 of pregnancy. The objective of this study was to determine the Trp requirement, Phe kinetics, and energy expenditure in early (d 35 to 53) and late (d 92 to 111) pregnancy using the indicator amino acid oxidation method and indirect calorimetry. The same 6 s...

The objective of this study was to determine the Ile requirement in early (d 39 to 61) and late (d 89 to 109) pregnancy using the indicator AA oxidation method. The same 7 Large White × Landrace sows in their fourth parity were used in early and late pregnancy. Each sow received 6 diets based on corn, corn starch, and sugar in both early and late pregnancy at constant feed allowances (2.5 kg/d)...
